Firefox stores the content of all the web pages you have visited (including pictures, animation, movies, downloads, etc) during a session in cache. When you click a link or type a URL to fetch a particular web page for which the cache already contains a copy, Firefox compares the cached copy to the original. If there have been no changes, Firefox uses the cached copy rather than refetching the original, saving processing and download time.
This speeds up the displaying of pages you frequently visit as a web browser can open them from your hard disk instead of downloading them from the web. But it can seriously compromise your privacy because anyone who can use your PC can tell where you have been on the web.
